Obama Takes Firm Stand on Net Neutrality

President Obama has come out swinging on the issue of Net Neutrality, even taking a swing (figuratively) at Tom Wheeler, his own appointee to head the FCC. Tom Wheeler had originally been in favor of Net Neutrality, and later flipflopped in favor of segregating the Internet into a Fast Lane (for those who are willing to pay a little extra) and a Slow Lane for everyone else.

Under the 1996 Telecommunications Act, the FCC has the authority to reclassify Internet Service Providers as utilities, and this is what Obama is urging the FCC to do.  If ISPs are classified as utilities, the FCC will be able to enforce Net Neutrality, i.e. the same Internet speed for everyone; no fast or slow lanes.  President Obama said:

“The time has come for the FCC to recognize that broadband service is of the same importance and must carry the same obligations as so many of the other vital services do.  To do that, I believe the FCC should reclassify consumer broadband service under Title II of the Telecommunications Act...This is a basic acknowledgment of the services ISPs provide to American homes and businesses, and the straightforward obligations necessary to ensure the network works for everyone — not just one or two companies.”

Bravo!  Net Neutrality is a populist issue — along with increasing the minimum wage and legalizing marijuana — that cuts across party lines.  I doubt if there are a whole lot of Internet users — regardless of how conservative they are — who are thinking “Sure, I'd be happy to pay more for Internet access or be relegated to the slow lane, because Freedom.”

Well it was Obama that put this fox in the Henhouse in the first place. I’m surprised he can’t do anything about it since last I checked the FCC was part of the executive branch. I saw The President on the TV today he evoked the Communications Act of 34, which said the “Airwaves are the property of the people” Carter wanted to revamp the act to include newer technologies like Infrared (remote controls), Cell, and Microwave, but it was delayed until Reagan came aboard and practically gifted the airwaves to the corporations (With Barry Goldwater saving the HAM and Shortwaves bands). The 1996 Act was another Clinton gift to Corporations and by the 2000’s FCC Chairman Michael Powell was getting ready to tie the final bow on the whole package.

Good Luck Mr. President

We’re talking about a whole generation of Conservatives and Tea Partiers who think it’s OK to be rich (in fact think it’s a God Given Right) and give them better privileges, as they earned it fair and square/job creators etc., would anything else be a surprise?

Erik: Tom Wheeler was originally considering the idea of reclassifying ISPs as utilities so they could be forced into net neutrality, because I remember Michael Powell threatening "World War III" if the FCC went through with this idea.

You're probably right that millions of conservative useful idiots will happily pay more for slower Internet service, just because of their devotion to Freedom and Bootstraps.

I'm of two minds with this. If he is so for NN why did he hire this Wheeler guy for the FCC when he was part of the industry or am I asking stupid questions again?
