Gasoline Prices: a Public Option

Somerset, Kentucky has been taken over by a bunch of them Comminists!  If this idea starts taking hold in the rest of the country, our beloved free enterprise system is toast; the Invisible Hand of the Marketplace will wither and die.

Residents of Somerset, KY have long complained that local gas prices are higher than in surrounding areas.  So the town will begin buying gasoline directly from the nearby Continental Refining Company and selling it to motorists at a city-operated fuel center.  This fuel center will have ten fuel pumps and will be storing 40,000 gallons each of gasoline and diesel fuel, and 20,000 gallons of off-road diesel fuel.

Lo and behold, the Public Option!  But don't these people understand?!?  Socialized gas stations will result in inferior gasoline, causing thousands of cars to break down on the highway at rush hour.  You'll need to make an appointment six months ahead of time just to fill up your gas tank.  A government-bureaucrat-operated gas station will have such long waiting lines, people will run out of gas while they're waiting in line to fill up.

Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler said:

“We don’t want to interfere with free enterprise.  We want to feel a competitive force so our citizens here in Somerset don’t pay more for gasoline than they do in surrounding areas.”

Uh oh, that's the same reasoning used by 8 million Obamacare recipients, who simply aren't aware of the Communist trap they've fallen into.

And there will be "junk it" panels. If your car is too run down, dented, rusty, or just looks like crap, it will be denied gas and sent to the junk yard. Also, watch out of all those foreign cars. They will take all your gas and leave you with an empty tank.

Here comes me to be the turd in the punch bowl. What happens when the city decides to shut it down because they figure out it is too expensive to run. Wish we had it here though. We filled up my car for a trip to the beach over the weekend for my bday and it cost $4.15 per gallon and that's just regular unleaded gas.

I'm sure most of the posters wont remember "GAS WARS" in the 60's, perhaps the competing stations should bring them back.

As American as ...

Good luck on the gas wars. At one time, most gas stations were independently owned and operated. No more. I have a friend who has a Exxon Mobile station. The oil company tells him what price to charge. He cannot set his own price.

American capitalism an its LACK of competition in action!

Jerry: Uh oh, so many things to be paranoid about. Thanks for the warning :)

Jess: True, that could happen. I still think it's a great idea though.

Erik: Ah yes, gas wars, 32 cents a gallon, attendants washing your windshield and checking under the hood and checking the tires...

Jerry: Good point. Perfect example of crony "capitalism" or monopoly "capitalism."
