New Expanded Voter ID laws: Marriage License Required

This hasn’t happened yet, but it’s probably just a matter of time before the red states start pouncing on the idea.  The people who are least likely to have a photo ID — low income, the young, minorities, the elderly — just happen to be mostly Democrats.

Presto!  “Voter fraud!  Make everyone show a photo ID.”

And now this:  Single voters favor Barack Obama by a huge margin.  Among single women, it’s Obama:  61% to 31%.

Among all single voters, Obama wins 54% to 34%.

Married voters favor Mitt Romney by a margin of 51% to 38%.

Karl Rove, ALEC — start cranking out the memos.  Red state legislators, you know what you’ve gotta do.

I believe the first state to pass legislation for voter ID was Florida (maybe Arizona?). Anyway, in Florida it was a legitimate idea as what started it all was a random check by the Supervisor of Elections office in Dade County (Miami) which uncovered several thousand registered voters who were not U.S. citizens. Now, call me a neocon if you like, but allowing aliens to vote is just plain stupid and, unconstitutional as the Constitution requires you to be a citizen to vote. Makes sense to me. Requiring something other than a driver's license makes sense as well because aliens (illegal or legal) are allowed to get a driver's license and drive. They are also allowed to get Social Security numbers and pay into the system. Now, where the real neocon assholes might take this thing I don't know, but I do know that some type of reform or regulation is needed.

Mr. C: Here's a link to that Minnesota voter ID plan that Democrats proposed but Republicans squelched (that I mentioned in the comments section at your site). It looked like an effective way to crack down on voter fraud without disenfranchising any eligible voters.

Also, Pennsylvania just passed a voter ID law that's expected to prevent about 750,000 eligible voters from voting. At least one state legislator even bragged publicly that "this will put Romney over the top."

As I said at your site, I don't doubt that voter fraud exists, especially in Florida like you were describing. But the GOP seems much less interested in solving the problem than in seeing how many Democrats they can keep out of the voting booth.

It is, as Eric Holder said, a poll tax. Pure and simple. Here in Ohio, we put the brakes on it. But the Rushpubliscum Klanservatives are getting by with it in way too many other venues.

Didn't mean to imply that there isn't a problem with the wingers abusing, or trying to abuse, voter ID. I agree 100% with your assessment. Just saying that there is some basis for the problem and we need to figure out how to address it, especially as we are moving closer to online voting.

well congratulations Mr Charleston. Who should really be upset with voter fraud should be those who fought so hard to vote . African Americans and Women.
You would think this would be more of a liberal cause to keep voter integrity. But once again it's those evil Republicans fighting for a cause that all legal citizens should embrace.

I cannot remember the exact figures but it was something like less than .10% of registrations that were taken to be voter fraud. The fraud that has been perpetuated recently, has all been from the republican camps via tactics like Pimp Mcstupid dressing up and getting ACORN booted, going to polling places and trying to register as dead people. It boggles my mind that in third world countries all they have to do is show up, get a purple ink stain and voila they vote, where the most exceptional country in the history of anything, cannot get their acts together as regards to voting. This is all about keeping republicans in charge, they've already said as much, when democratic policies are spoken about people vote for them and it's usually "the others" that do the voting for dems so the pugs need to get rid of us "others" no matter the other you are. Not rich, gone, not white talibangelical male..gone the rest you know so I won't add.

It is a cause with us, you ignorant bimbo. We are fighting HARD to keep your hood-wearing heroes from disenfranchising millions of American citizens. I swear, the fumes from the oven cleaner must have completely rotted whatever brain you started out with.

JR: A poll tax is exactly what this is.

Mr. C: I'm in favor of making sure everyone who votes is eligible. But this has to be done in a way that doesn't disenfranchise any eligible voters.

Jess: It's definitely about keeping Republicans in charge. I doubt if ALEC is concerned about voter fraud; they're just concerned that Democrats are voting.

Tom, I'm skeptical of that spread between married and single people. It just doesn't ring true. I have a hunch if instead of legally wed, couples in long-term relationships had been lumped in with the marrieds, the results would've been much closer.

Mr. Charleston, I don't want noncitizens registering to vote, much less voting. Sounds like a case of widespread, gross incompetence in Florida state government when all those unqualified people were signed up. That said, I'm skeptical that that many illegal aliens actually bothered to register as voters. Doing so carries risk of being caught, requires taking time off work and isn't much help as a form of ID.

I'm even more skeptical after the voter suppression shenanigans Florida Republicans pulled in 2000 and 2004. Things like sending cops into black and Hispanic neighborhoods, spreading word on the street they would be at polling places, on the lookout for felons trying to vote; for people with outstanding warrants, unpaid utility bills, traffic tickets, unpaid rent, and on and on. Sure enough, police were conspicuously present close to a bunch of polling places in those years, according to stories I've read.

Then, there was the practice of sending mail to registered voters, then disqualifying any if the mail came back as undeliverable. That effectively disenfranchised more than a few military members, some of them risking their lives in the Mideast — not that that bothered Republicans one damned bit.

If someone illegally registers to vote, he or she has committed a crime. The answer is not to make all of society, or suspect segments of society, jump through hoops to prove they're qualified. As with any crime, the answer is for authorities to investigate when and where there evidence a crime has been committed. That means going after individual lawbreakers, not suspect segments of society: the young, the old, the dark of skin, the foreign of accent. People likely to vote Democratic, in other words.

SW you must mean jumping trough hoops with flames. After all getting your picture is such a difficult task unless you are headed to the Social Security or Welfare Office, then it's a piece of cake
