The Draining of the ALEC abscess

There’s still a lot of filth and disease festering in there, but the boil has been lanced and the pus is starting to ooze out.   The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is being drained from several directions.

Some of ALEC’s largest contributors are leaving in droves.  Wendy’s is the latest company to withdraw from ALEC, following in the footsteps of Pepsi, Coca Cola, Intuit, Kraft Foods, McDonald’s and the Gates Foundation.

And now ALEC is lashing out at the “Coordinated Intimidation Campaign” by liberals against ALEC’s members.  An ALEC spokesman issued a public tantrum that basically said “I’m melting!”

A lot of these rats have deserted the sinking ALEC ship because of Color of Change.  This group has been targeting ALEC’s contributors because of the voter suppression laws and “stand your ground” laws which have been written by ALEC and dutifully transcribed by dimwitted state legislators.

And that’s not all:  ALEC is also catching it from the shareholders of some of their largest companies.  More and more shareholders are demanding that their companies disclose all contributions to ALEC and other tax-exempt lobbying organizations.

It’s a start.  But there’s still a whole lot of draining and lancing and cleansing to be done.

The residual scumminess will take a lot longer to recede, however.

It makes you wonder how closely some of these companies examine where they throw their money. Makes me think they have too much.

It's past time this group of miscreants was bathed in sunlight. Now they don't like it when attention is brought to them and will get to whining about the freedom of speech like they always do, even though it has nothing to do with that. Oh and JR, I just played that song for hubby and he is cracking up right along with me.

Re: what Jerry Critter said, I get the impression the Gates Foundation wasn't clear about what ALEC really is and how it operates. The foundation was probably approached by a lobbyist or institutional fund raiser and fed a line of BS. The foundation didn't join ALEC, but it did give about $400,000 earmarked for promoting legislation to develop improvement programs for public schools. With the recent revelations and negative public reaction, the foundation decided no more money for ALEC.

The Gateses, including Bill Gates' father, who is director of the foundation, are decent people. They have stayed out of politics.

I suspect the story is similar with some of the companies pulling out. They might've been interested in legislation that had some bearing on their business, but didn't intend to fund or otherwise be involved in things like what has gone on in Wisconsin and Michigan.

In any case, the exodus is good news. I hope the whole rotten organization becomes such a pariah that having anything to do with it is bad for business and a sure way to get unelected.

Why would corporations be concerned about writing more liberal gun laws which could put their own cashiers at risk?

That has nothing to do with their bottom line, tax breaks or even abortion.
