“Welfare Recipients Are Like Scavenging Raccoons”

The Attorney General of Nebraska actually said this. Jon Bruning (R—Inbred) said:

“The raccoons figured out the beetles are in the bucket. And its like grapes in a jar. The raccoons — they're not stupid, they're gonna do the easy way if we make it easy for them. Just like welfare recipients all across America. If we don't send them to work, they're gonna take the easy route.”

That’s right! Why don’t those lazy parasites just get out there and get a job?!?!?

Jon Bruning is running for the U.S. Senate; he’s hoping to replace Ben Nelson. Let’s hope Nebraska’s voters won’t actually elect that walking waste of DNA.

Democrats should saturate Nebraska’s TV stations with commercials showing Jon Bruning spewing out his hatred and contempt. Assuming most voters don’t actually agree that “welfare recipients are like scavenging raccoons,” this sack of putrid should be sent back under the rock he crawled out from.

I like your calling Jon Bruning a walking waste of DNA -- no shit.

People who need welfare usually have had some cataclysmic upheaval in their lives. Implying that they are lazy or taking the easy way is just wrong.

And just by the way, if Mr. Bruning had to live the way a raccoon has to live, he'd never call it "easy" -- he couldn't do it. He wouldn't last a day without his subsidized bubble life. What an idiot.

If this is the best Bruner's got, I sure hope he's not counting on winning any election as a Senator.

And if the people of Nebraska are stupid enough to vote him in, they deserve him.

30 years later the Republicans are still getting mileage from Reagans's "Welfare Queen with Cadillacs" Lie

Fine, we'll increase taxes and use that money to put everyone to work in a college-edumacated cubicle job and America will magically stop sucking balls as it continues tumbling down the slope to third world status.

Dave: Good one.

SM: Very apt observations. Unfortunately, trying to explain that to a dimwitted rightwad would be like explaining advanced calculus to a 5-year-old.

Erik: Yup, the good old Welfare Cadillac myth lives on. It'll never die.

Randal: Cubicle farms made America great.

Bruning's ignorance and prejudice are disgusting, all right. But both will resonate with many people in his state and region. It's a world away from places like the Bronx, inner-city Chicago and West L.A.

That state is lightly populated and more than a little insular. People have strong family and community ties that go back generations. Those ties make finding a job easier for a young person starting out, even in bad years.

Nebraska has been buffered from the bad economy to a considerable extent in recent years by development of a lucrative oil and gas industry.

I explain this not to excuse Bruning, but to make the point that many people believe exactly what he said. We need to find ways to get them to understand there's a world beyond their plains-state's borders they don't really know and understand. Because if we can get them to learn and understand, they just might start to support real progressive Democrats and not GOP jerks like Bruning.

SW: When I was looking for information about the unemployment rate in the U.S. as a whole, and Nebraska in particular, I found out Nebraska's unemployment rate is just over 4%. As great as that is, it would create a certain callousness and lack of sympathy for people who are out of work.

None of which changes the fact that Bruning is a total F$#%&!#$!!!
