Poll Majority: “Don’t Touch Social Security or Medicare!”

Powerful interest groups have spent billions of dollars bribing Congress and trying to brainwash the public. “We need to fix [i.e. privatize] these entitlement programs or the country will COLLAPSE!”

Bribing Congress — Check. Mission Accomplished. It’s hard to find a legislator who isn’t completely bought and paid for.

Brainwashing the public — not so much. According to an AP-GfK poll, 60% of Americans say Social Security and Medicare are vital to the safety net; and we can balance the budget without cutting either of those programs.

One poll respondent nailed it with:

“I'm pretty confident Medicare will be there, because there would be a rebellion among voters. Republicans only got a hint of that this year. They got burned. They touched the hot stove.”

Between this survey and the backlash at Republican town hall meetings, conservative politicians are getting the message and making the necessary changes:

Realizing that their taxpaying constituents have spoken, Republicans have decided not to derail Medicare after all

We need to crack down on those raucous town hall meetings and stop these embarrassing YouTube videos. Republican politicians have turned into a laughingstock, being shown all over the Internet squirming and twitching in front of their enraged constituents. Solution: Ban all recording devices at town hall meetings.

And if a few lowly senior citizens try to gather outside of a teabagger meeting, call the police on them.

Problem solved.

I am more and more becoming a proponent of that ol' tried and true method for lying, on-the-take snake oil salesmen (aka Washington Politicians) and other two legged, fork-tongue prevaricators...tar and feather their sorry asses...at the town meetings.

it's not about "cutting" those programs,it's about reforming them.
But isn't "reforming" Medicare what the Healthcare bill is intended to do?
Whether they get "reformed" or "rationed". The end result is going to be the same.

The attempt to keep people from covering the town hall events? It figures.

One of the ways the right wing got the "tea party" going was by getting all those sound bites and clips of angry shouting at the Democrat politicians over health care at town halls into the nation's news, night after night...

Heavens, the right wing sure can't have that kind of intense coverage of their pols being shouted down! Millions or Americans might realize that... gasp... the Republicans are FRAUDS! LOL

I always thought the Teaparty said up and down: Don’t mess with my Medicare!

Sorry Lisa we have pointed out the last Republican attempt to “clean” up medicare and how it became a corporate winfall, and because it had to budget tied to it - it became the largest drain on the ecomony and even the “Fiscal hawks” like Paul Ryan voted for it. We pointed that out and you said nothing.

It’s actually in better shape because the Democrats removed some other tax breaks to help pay for it. We pointed that out and you said nothing.

Now you want to fix things, please tell me what you want to fix THIS time?

Yes, Lisa, Republicans want to "reform" Medicare and Social Security by turning them over to the financial industry that gave us the tech bubble, the housing bubble, credit default swaps, junk mortgages and the tech bubble bust, and the economic collapse of 2007-2008.

On the subject or recording devices, does anyone remember a video that got some traction a few years ago of a (I think) Baltimore cop harassing and threatening to kill a skateboarding pre-teen?

If I remember correctly, part of the officer's defense was to get the video excluded from the investigation on the basis that the kid didn't have the right to video tape the officer without the officer's permission.

The court found that, because the actions of on-duty police are already a matter of public record, the kid didn't need permission.

Wouldn't a similar principle hold true in a town hall meeting?

We could always go with Kyl and Gingrich. You know, the not meant to be a factual statement or what I sad yesterday you aren't allowed to use it verbatim because it's a falsehood. I am loving this wreck brought to us by the republicans. Same thing happened with 401ks replacing pension plans from companies did it not? We see how that went as far as people losing money in their savings, oh yeah I totally want them gambling with Medicare money. Not enough they are going after Medicare but Medicaid also for people that really need medical care. That will be the next big push to rid themselves of the peasants on Medicaid, they might be able to do it too since them peasants aren't like AARP and the senior lobby. They are only poor people after all.

jadedj: I agree; tar and feathers for two legged, fork-tongue prevaricators.

Snave: The Right's general philosophy is "When a conservative is speaking, everyone must be perfectly quiet. When a liberal is speaking, call in the rabblerousers and hired thugs."

Erik: Teabaggers have no problem with death panels, as long as the death panel is a private company and not some socialist Obamacare bureaucrat.

Anonymous: Republicans don't care about polls. Their elections are financed by corporate lobbyists; they don't have to worry about what the lowly public thinks.

SW: Since the financial industry has already contributed so many bubbles, what's not to love about a Social Security bubble and a Medicare bubble :)

Randal: Commie.

Thomas: I don't think an anti-recording law would stand up under legal scrutiny. But this shows how anal and all-controlling some rightwing politicians can be.

Jess: Yup, let's donate our Medicare and Social Security money to the Wall Street Casino. And it's time for those peasants on Medicaid to hurry up and die and get out of the way.

The cost of three weeks at war would fix all our financial problems.... Stop policing the world... It's NOT our job. Top military have gone on record - schools, infrastucture, and clean energy are more important than war.
