Frank Gaffney: the Fred Phelps of Muslims
Frank Gaffney is to Muslims what Fred Phelps is to homosexuals. Or maybe he’s more like Joe McCarthy or the John Birch Society. Everybody is a Communist infiltrator. There’s a Communist under every bed.
In Frank Gaffney’s universe, everybody is a secret Muslim terrorist plotting to destroy America from within. A few months ago, he revealed to a shocked nation that Grover Norquist isn’t really a rightwing anti-tax crusader — he’s a Muslim infiltrator.
And now the latest secret member of the Muslim Brotherhood: General David Petraeus. I knew it!
Three weeks ago, Petraeus condemned the burning of a Quran by an inbred Florida redneck. That well-publicized Quran-burning led to riots that killed more than twenty people. But in Frank Gaffney’s world (and don’t even ask what color the sky is in there), General Petraeus showed “submission to Sharia” when he condemned the Quran-burning.

Those damned Mohammedans are running us all over! Where is a Jesus-loving PATRIOT to find safe shelter these days?
JR: It's pretty scary. When a rightwing demagogue and a general turn out to be Muslims, we're all doomed.
Gaffney is probably getting a little desperate or didn't get the memo.
It seems obvious Frank Luntz or someone like him has convinced GOP crackpot crusaders that any talk of getting into a war with Iran will turn voters off, so don't do it. But Gaffney makes his living being a scaremonger and a warmonger. GOP pols are looking to the next election, but he's got to maintain his very nice lifestyle now.
SW: It's always amusing when one of them doesn't get the memo. They all try to march in lockstep, but these ugly fights keep breaking out when they try to out-pander each other or when their ideologies don't overlap completely (smoking out Muslims vs. lowering taxes for millionaires).
