Human Rights Violations in China

President Bush has rightly condemned China’s despicable record on human rights. It’s just unconscionable that such a brutal dictatorship is allowed to host the 2008 Olympics, but at least they’ve been duly reprimanded by the Leader of the Free World.

And the Chinese government is indeed a ruthless, totally unaccountable dictatorship. You’re not going to believe this, but they often imprison people for long periods, without even charging them with a crime.

Prison conditions in China are unimaginably brutal — inhuman! Prisons are way overcrowded, and prisoners are often abused by guards and other prisoners. Sometimes the government uses torture to extract information or a confession.

If you believe in a right to privacy, forget China. Their government has a massive spying apparatus that George Orwell never would’ve imagined. Nobody in China is free from the watchful eye of Big Brother.

In a few extreme cases, the Chinese government has held prisoners for a long time with no trial, and then, after finding them NOT guilty of the charges, has still REFUSED to release them from prison! How is something like this even possible? What a sick sick country! Can’t the United Nations do something about this?

China’s brutal attitudes and customs are nothing new. Throughout their history the Chinese have expanded their territory by conquering and brutalizing neighboring tribes and countries.

China holds at least one other disgraceful world record: They have a larger percentage of their population behind bars than any other country in the world. Oh wait, I was thinking of somebody else.

Wow, I didn't realize the Chinamen were that bad. I can see why Bush spoke up, for he knows that American citizens, especially those in the government, would never stand for those kind of shenanigans in our great nation.

It has been a rather scary eight years. I can't imagine how this prez can face the world and, with a straight face, condemn China for their human rights violations.
I can only hope that come Novemeber there are enough Americans left with more than two brain cells to rub together who want to see a change in the old guard.

Randal: Yes, China must be a terrible terrible country. Thank God for Dumbya making the world safe for Freedom.

Rockync: I also can't imagine Bush keeping a straight face when he condemns another country's human rights record. And I share your hope that there'll be enough American voters with 2 brain cells to rub together, who will keep Bush 44 (aka McCain) out of the White House.

Bush can make this hypocritical statement with out a touch of irony because he knows that a majority of Americans are ill informed about what their government is up to, or have swallowed the jizz filled Kool- Aid that allows this behavior from the US because we're "exceptional".

Erik: No doubt they're appalled at Red China for violating human rights and civil rights, and they wish China had the stellar civil rights record that America has :)

Lew: That's right, America is the Greatest Country In The World Goddamnit and we can do what we want. If any other country holds prisoners without trial and tortures them, it's because it's a barbaric primitive country. If we do it, it's because the prisoners are terrorists and we're just guarding the safety of the American People.

That was a Funny Post. Very amusing. I am starting to see your point of view Tom:

"America is the Greatest Country In The World Goddamnit and........ If we do it, it's because the prisoners are terrorists and we're just guarding the safety of the American People."

This helps me understand why the MSM protects us from that icky T word???? Oh, that right truth!! Long live the Republic, and Empire!

I watched the opening ceremonies last night, and Bush looked right at home with the Chinese. He and Putin were jawing away, probably sharing water boarding techniques.

"Yo, Vlad, y'all gotta try it with ice cold water, it really makes them suckers jump an scream."

"Listen to me, you little twerp. I parade shirtless while hunting. I am real man. Manly man. I know best way to water board criminals."

rockync said it for me: "I can't imagine how this prez can face the world and, with a straight face, condemn China for their human rights violations."

It takes an especially toxic blend of arrogance, ignorance and hypocrisy, that's all.

Bush had better be careful making noises about rights and freedoms to the Chinese, though. He's talking to his — and thanks to him, our — bankers.

SW: Don't worry, Bush's wording was very very respectful and toned down. He all but said "with the utmost respect, Your Holiness" in every sentence. As dumb as he is, he knows better than to offend the landlord.

Yes, of course the US is just as bad. The Guantamamo situation, where a few hundred guilty terrorists were put in prison (caght in the act of being involved in atrocities), is just as bad as China imprisoning and executing hundreds of thousands of people for having the wrong religion, speaking out about Tibetan independence and Taiwan, etc.

You must be a lot more up to date on the news than I am. So you mean those prisoners at Gitmo have already been tried and convicted of terrorist activity? Dang, how'd I miss that?

Anon's comment follows the same lame circular reasoning Bush used in getting us into war in Iraq. In Anon's opinion, Gitmo prisoners were arrested for being terrorists, so of course they're guilty of terrorist acts. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been arrested for being terrorists.

Simple, isn't it?

I defy anon to prove the just convicted Salim Hamdan was "caght in the act of being involved in atrocities." Anon will have his work cut out for him, because the prosecutors didn't even make that claim.

SW: After all, if it turns out we falsely arrested any of these "enemy combatants" and they really aren't guilty, it's our bad. So much easier and more face-saving to just say "of course they're guilty. We arrested them on the battlefield with a Koran in one hand and a boxcutter in the other."
