Gorbachev Bitch-Slaps Bush

Things have come full circle. The Red Menace that we were afraid would “bury us” — the Evil Empire — is now warning the President of the United States about his dangerous and reckless behavior.

Mikhail Gorbachev, who presided over the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1989, accused Bush of “sowing disorder across the world by seeking to build an empire.”

He said that after the Cold War ended, “The Americans then gave birth to the idea of a new empire, world leadership by a single power, and what followed? What has followed are unilateral actions, what has followed are wars, what has followed is ignoring the U.N. Security Council, ignoring international law and ignoring the will of the people, even the American people.”

He continued: “When I look at today’s world I have a worrying feeling about the growth of world disorder. I don’t think the current President of the United States and his administration will be able to change the situation as it is developing now — it is very dangerous…It is a massive strategic mistake: no single center can command the entire world, no one.”

Gorbachev knows first hand what he's talking about. When the Soviet Union collapsed on his watch, the Soviet military was hopelessly quagmired in Afghanistan, which was supposed to be a “slam dunk” nine years earlier. The war in Afghanistan, together with the out-of-control military spending which pushed the Soviet government into bankruptcy, was the death knell for the Soviet Union.

On the other hand, Iraqmire, together with America’s trillion dollar deficit — oops, don’t even go there…

Gorbachev is right when he say's:

As much as Fuhrer would like to control the whole damn world he cannot! I mean it has already been made obvious to the world that this Coward can't run his own country much less someone else's country. On Fuh's watch we were attacked on 9/11, have lost over 3,700 soldiers, have gone into a debt so big our grandkids will probably never pay it off and have left our wounded Troops with pretty much no healthcare! His administration if you can call it that are nothing more than a bunch of lying thugs dressed as politicians! They are so worthless it's unreal!!!!

Funkytown Fighter: Yeah, it's too bad we have to side up with a former Soviet leader when he criticizes our government, but he's right. At the rate he's going, Bush is going to take our country over a cliff just like Gorbachev did with the Soviet Union.

Enigma4ever: Yup, "sad, tragic and pathetic" are good descriptions. Whatever outsiders must think of us, it probably isn't pretty.

Hey, wait a minute here... Didn't Ronald Reagan bring about the collapse of the Soviet Union when he said something about taking down a wall, er, somewhere or other?

Just kidding.

I feel uncomfortable saying this, but I almost enjoy it when former leaders of our country and current and former leaders of other countries point out Bush's ineptitude and how he is making the world into a not-as-safe place. I loved it when Carter slammed Bush, and hearing Gorby slam him is also sweet.

Snave: Bush needs all this negative feedback he's been getting, from ex-presidents and from leaders of other countries. Friends don't let friends push their countries over a cliff.

Bush will not listen to anyone out side his box. He has put this country on the edge of that cliff you speak of.

We cannot continue to spend money on a war that will take us nowhere and benefit only the rich oil companies at the end.

Our country will slip as did the Soviet Union. China will be our pusher as we were the pusher for the Soviets. I just hope we get this mad man out of office before that can happen.

Bush has been "bitch-slapped" around by the progressive bogosphere for so long (and rightly so), that I'm wondering whether he has not become numb about it.

But it is nice to hear the same from a living historical figure like Gorbatchev ;-)

(By the way, Tom: you are aware that you have been tapped for a Thinking Blogger award, right?

Just wondering, is all ...)

Let's Talk: That's a scary prognosis, that China might be our pusher just as we were the Soviet Union's pusher. I just hope we can all cling to the edge of that cliff for the remainder of Bush's term.

Mentarch: That's a thought, maybe Bush has a tolerance for being bitch-slapped. Or maybe he's a masochist and he's secretly enjoying all the bitch-slapping. "Ouch! Mmmmpphhh! I gotta teach Laura how to hit like that!"

I guess I missed that 7/10 post at your site. I check out your blog regularly; I don't know how I missed it. Sorry about that.

Unfortunately, I've been tagged a few other times for this award, and I always decline. For one thing, most of the bloggers I read regularly have already been tagged. And there are so many great people out there, if I named five other bloggers I'd feel like I was dissing the ones I didn't mention. But I appreciate your tagging me and the nice things you said. Sorry I missed that post or I would have answered then.

The NeoCons should all be bitch slapped and removed from their positions. Cheney comes to mind... PNAC members should be sent to prison too!

Gorbachev knows what he speaks of.

A long time ago, I posted about how Gorbachev was basically Chimpromised himself. The previous incompetent dolts that ran the USSR left him unable to fix what was broken.

Ours is coming, and it'll be basically the same. Soon.

Bush is going to take our country over a cliff just like Gorbachev did with the Soviet Union.

But Gorbachev didn't. He tried to stave off the disaster that an incompetent, monkey looking cronyist left him facing. He couldn't stop it; it was already too late. Gorbachev knew this, whether or not he says so publicly.

Jolly Roger: Interesting post you have linked. It's true, Gorbachev took power after Brezhnev (and a few other forgotten short-termers) fucked everything up. Gorbachev did what he could but it was too late. The parallels aren't pretty. This would mean that if we have a much better president after Bush leaves, and we still fall, our collapse will have happened on the new president's watch.

Totally unrelated to anything: when I was in the Navy, the executive officer of our ship looked enough like Brezhnev to be his twin brother. He was the biggest douchebag I ever met during those four years; nobody else even came in a close second.

Damn. When Mikhail Gorbachev calls you out, you must be royally screwing up. Not that that's news to us, but come one, if there was any doubt...

Not that Bush will listen. Sadly, we may have to make it a skit on Sesame Street so maybe Bush will watch it and get the message during milk-and-cookie time and before naptime.

Mile High Pixie: Yup, that's pretty humiliating (if Bush is even capable of that emotion) to be called out by a former Soviet leader. I doubt if Bush is ready for Sesame Street yet. He's still watching the Tele-Tubbies and can't quite keep up with all the plot changes.

Suzie-Q(S-Q): Yes, he's right about that. Russia learned this the hard way and now it's our turn.
