Dick Cheney: Crawl Back Into Your Hole and Stay There

This past Tuesday must have been Bash Dick Cheney Day. Our illustrious leader probably wishes he had never poked his head out of his cubbyhole. That’s probably what everybody wishes.

During an argument in the Senate about continued funding for Iraqmire, Cheney accused Senator Harry Reid of “defeatism.” Reid fired back with "I'm not going to get into a name-calling match with somebody that has 9 percent approval ratings." Pow! Give ‘em Hell Harry!

On the same day, George McGovern had a column responding to Cheney’s recent attacks on him. Some of the highlights include:

“In the war of my youth, World War II, I volunteered for military service at the age of 19 and flew 35 combat missions, winning the Distinguished Flying Cross as the pilot of a B-24 bomber. By contrast, in the war of his youth, the Vietnam War, Cheney got five deferments and has never seen a day of combat — a record matched by President Bush.”

“We, of course, already know that when Cheney endorses a war, he exempts himself from participation. On second thought, maybe it's wise to keep Cheney off the battlefield — he might end up shooting his comrades rather than the enemy.”

Cheney, McGovern and Reid are scheduled to go quail hunting next (to be continued)

Baahahahaaaa! Sweet! I hope Reid Z-snapped in the air when he said that.

Wait...somebody *saw* Dick Cheney? That guy's more elusive than Bigfoot at this point. Hell, for all we know, Bigfoot is the VP of the US and Dick Cheney is lurking in the Canadian wilderness.

It seems Cheney did his job-just look at what you heard from the Republicans today about Reed and this war.

McGovern also said he expects the Chimpster and Shooter to both have to resign.

To that I definitely say, Bring It On!

Most excellent that McGovern hit back. These right wing assholes like Dick Cheney dish it out all day long, time for them to get as well as they give.

McGovern nailed the SOB Chickenhawk Cheney for what he is: A Coward.

Good for Reid, and good for McGovern.

One of the rightwing's worst enemies is reason. When they are faced with opposing views that they cannot logically argue, they are very limited, in that they can usually only resort to name-calling and ad hominum attacks.

Cheney is like a snarling dog trapped in a corner. Every day must be a living paranoid nightmare for the guy. The more he talks, the nuttier he seems to get. So, let him keep talking, and let the voices of reason continue to cut him to shreds. It's pathetic, but it is nonetheless rewarding to witness.

9 percent... and falling, most likely!

Mile High Pixie: The more elusive Cheney gets, the more twisted he is when he finally emerges. It would be fine with me if he just stayed in his cubbyhole for the rest of his term.

Let’s Talk: Yup, Cheney served his purpose. Every time he spews, we get another round of all the usual rightwing talking points.

Jolly Roger: I sure hope McGovern was right about that.

PoliShifter: Yeah, it was refreshing to hear McGovern finally hit back. Harry Reid gets surprisingly assertive from time to time, but McGovern was always so mild-mannered. I didn’t know he had it in him. You Go George!

Snave: Yup, you’ve got it. Hitting the wingnuts with reason and logic is like making a cross sign when a vampire approaches. All they can do is keep spitting out their tired old slogans and talking points, and those are getting less effective. Finally.

Funkytown Fighter: Yup, Cheney and Bush (and most of the other neocons) have been so sheltered and pampered all their lives, they have no idea what war is like. This makes it easier for them to keep getting other people to do their dirty work.

I was channel-flipping yesterday and caught a few minutes of CNN's Wolf Blitzer program. Some footage of the Bush/Cheney automaton Saxby Chambliss was shown, in which the Senator was spouting much of the Bush/Cheney line about refusing to bring troops home, keeping the war going, etc. while all the time trying to smear the Democrats, make them look cowardly, etc.

Next was a brief interview from Max Cleland, who said he had been smeared by Chambliss before, and knows all about how that goes. He also recommended that people not take any war-related advice from someone who was able to get out of serving from the "war of his time", that is Vietnam, as Chambliss apparently did (and as Dick Cheney did) through deferrments (sp?).

I find it simply amazing how all these rightwing politicos who were never in the military and who never experienced war firsthand seem to portray themselves as such experts on war and how to run a war...

I don't think that those of us who haven't served in the military or who haven't had firsthand war experience are trying to tell the military how to run a war, as the Bush line goes. I think what many of us are saying is that we don't like the idea of war, and that we don't think the Iraq war was necessary for our nation's security; that war IS something to be avoided because of the destruction and loss it creates. WWI and WWII? I believe those wars were necessary. Other conflicts the U.S. has been involved in since WWII? I have my doubts.

We aren't saying "Here, run the war this way!" I think we are saying "Let's not have war at all." The things the military could accomplish in Iraq have been accomplished, and to prolong the war simply doesn't seem prudent. That doesn't just go for lefties who are not or never have been in the military, it goes for a number of lefties who DID go to Vietnam or who HAVE served in the military.

Those neocons who never served ARE saying to the military "Here, run the war this way." A lot of them seem to think everything should be run as one would run a business, and they seem to take this same approach when it comes to war. The rich CEOs sit in their offices, and those serving under them tell the minions what to do. The Bush/Cheney administration seems like a big queen bee, with all the beehive workers busily doing what they have been programmed to do to insure its survival.

To me, this all seems to make John McCain some kind of peculiarity or aberration. Here we have a guy who has seen the worst of what war has to offer and who has been severely smeared by Bush in the past, yet he is for the continuation of the Iraq war. Sure, he admits Iraq has been mismanaged, but he is still basically supporting the Bush war agenda, isn't he? To hear someone who has been through as much as he has... come out as a supporter of war, at all? It really makes me think he may be a bit off his rocker.

Snave: I think Saxby Chambliss is the lowest of all the chickenhawks. Max Cleland is a triple amputee from the Vietnam war, and Saxby Chambliss drove him out of the Senate by smearing him as "soft on terrorism." I don't know which is worse, Chambliss' smear tactics or the fact that gullible voters fell for it.

You have to respect McCain for what he's been through, but I think you're right that he's been off his rocker lately.
