American Military Leaders: NOT the Nazi Secret Service

If the United States is ever subjected to a Nuremberg-type trial for war crimes against Iraq (or Iran or whoever’s next on our hit list), the following phrase might be missing: “I vass only following orderss.”

Unlike the German army of 65 years ago, many American military commanders are prepared to resign rather than follow orders to attack Iran. “The British government has learned” (sorry, that phrase always cracks me up) that “there are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran. There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

Patriotic Americans (true Patriots, not those mindless “don’t you dare question our president” dipshits) should be welling up with pride. Unlike the Axis Powers of World War II and other past aggressors, American military commanders have consciences and values. They're willing to think for themselves — even sacrifice their careers — instead of blindly following orders from a crazed megalomaniac. Is this a great country or what?

Prague Twin: Yup, that's the reason. The country that's bombing hundreds of thousands of their citizens is a Democracy, Goddamnit, and they don't even appreciate that.

Um, have you seen this?
http://www.alternet.org/story/48494

It's an interview of Noam Chomsky by Michael Shank at AlterNet. The article is lengthy, but v-e-r-y enlightening.

Like, why did Israel really invade Lebanon and leave a million (cluster) bomblets behind in the south?

Like, could the surge be part of an overall plan to help Khuzestan (where the oil is) secede from Iran?

And so forth.

I would well up with pride in knowing that our country's military leaders were willing to stand up for common sense in the face of the administration's lunacy. Because I believe people at top military levels have to realize Bush is bedbug crazy, I also tend to think there must be contingencies in place in case he does decide to disregard Congress and do something totally indefensible like bomb or invade Iran.

I think that if a number of the nation's military leaders resigned as a form of protest over such actions by Bush, it would be a nice statement... but I also think they would only be starting a job they would need to finish. Because they would do what they would have to do for the sake of our country, i.e. because they are true patriots, I believe they would also return things to "normal" quickly enough. Presidential elections in 2007 instead of 2008?

Nah, it can't happen here, right? Does it NEED to happen? I don't believe that U.S. military action against Iran needs to happen, anyway. However, after reading "Bush On The Couch", I believe such action is inevitable, given the personality and mental traits of the president. I probably sound like a broken record, but if you haven't read that book, it's a "must read". It is highly illustrative of how dire of straits our country is really in, with Bush in office.

Candace: That’s a very informative link. You're right, it’s pretty long. I skimmed through it but I’ll read it in more depth later. But he makes some good points. Almost all of our military adventures around the world (at least since Vietnam) have been about power and control. Big Business (using the American government as its vehicle) and a few “Christian” organizations are determined to established hegemony over the world. I’ve read this other places too. Do a web search for Wayne Madsen and you'll see similar things to what Chomsky was saying. Wayne Madsen’s credibility is sort of questionable, but I think there's a lot of truth to what he says.

For that matter, I’ve even read speculation that our invasion of Afghanistan was about oil. It had to do with an oil pipeline from one of the former Soviet republics, and whose territory the pipeline would go through.

Snave: If we have a “generals’ revolt” over invading Iran, that'll sure separate us from other would-be conquerors of the past. It would definitely be something to be proud of; like having the Boston Tea Party all over again.

I’ll have to check out “Bush on the Couch.” I’ve read posts and articles about the book. He's one fucked-up individual, no question about that.

I was so glad to hear some of our military leaders have the the guts to take this stand.

Kurt: Yup, it's very encouraging. Military officers' sense of right and wrong might come in handy if Bush tries any future "pre-emptive" invasions and/or if Bush tries to declare martial law in the U.S.

I'll be very happy if this stand prevents the coming Iran war - but I guess I'm just in a glass half empty mood. 'Cause it would have been a hell of a lot better if they'd taken that stand at the beginning of the Iraq war.

Did you know that the Pentagon issued secret orders to all the branches not to follow any orders from the President?

That was during the last days of Watergate and the Pentagon was afraid Nixon might do something crazy.

Erik: I never knew about that. That's great. That's what checks and balances are all about. The Pentagon might have to do this again. Bush is so far gone he makes Nixon look stable.
