Bush’s Newest Deserter: The Cakewalk Guy

We’ve officially come full circle now. Kenneth Adelman, who announced in 2002 that an Iraqi invasion would be “a cakewalk,” is now the latest conservative rat to desert the sinking ship.

In 2002, Bush anointed Iraq as part of his “Axis of Evil.” Bush and Cheney traveled all over the country whipping up hysteria and paranoia about Saddam Hussein. And in our Famous Last Words department, Kenneth Adelman wrote:

“I believe demolishing Hussein's military power and liberating Iraq would be a cakewalk. Let me give simple, responsible reasons: (1) It was a cakewalk last time; (2) they’ve become much weaker; (3) we’ve become much stronger; and (4) now we’re playing for keeps.”

Oh boy, a cakewalk! What’re we waiting for?? This can’t lose!

Right after the statue of Saddam Hussein was yanked down, Adelman and Cheney and a few other Neocons had a party celebrating our victory. But, in the words of this article, “Forty-three months later, the cakewalk looks more like a death march.”

Adelman has had a falling out with Rumsfeld, he’s no longer on speaking terms with Cheney and he believes that “the president is ultimately responsible” for “the debacle that was Iraq.”

Last week Adelman said “There are a lot of lives that are lost. A country’s at stake. A region’s at stake. This is a gigantic situation…This didn’t have to be managed this bad. It’s just awful.”

Nothing like a little twenty twenty hindsight. Save the crocodile tears. A cakewalk???

It aggravates me that the NeoCons who planned this little adventure don't have to endure some kind of punishment...

J. Marquis: I couldn't agree more. After all, if somebody accidentally kills somebody in their car, or causes a forest fire accidentally, they're still punished. Don't get me started on these neocons; how they can maneuver us into a war that causes all this death and destruction and then say "oops, gee, we meant well..."

Prague Twin: Yup, all those good intentions (if they even were) and look where it got us.

The road to hell is paved with Republicans.

Adelman said “the debacle that WAS Iraq...” ???

I think he surely must have meant to use the present tense in this case.

I agree wholeheartedly with The Major... The people who have mismanaged our foreign affairs should be made to pay for it somehow. To those who would say "But we were attacked first!" I have to say yes, we were attacked, but not by Saddam Hussein. Whatever happened to the administration's efforts to "get Osama"? If the Iraq war has anything to do with the "war on terror", I'm a monkey's uncle. Or maybe my uncle was a monkey. Whatever.

Cakewalk... sheesh.

Snave: When Adelman said "the debacle that WAS Iraq" he only meant for him. It doesn't affect him any more. He can just slink off to the next think tank or whatever; no accountability or anything.

I suppose Iran is going to be a "cakewalk" too.

I.M. Dedd: Of course Iran will be a cakewalk. Throngs of grateful Iranians will shower our soldiers with candy and ice cream (or was it flowers?).
