Make YOUR Vote Count!

Do you want YOUR VOTE to count this November? If so, please Act Now. Legislation is now pending in the House and Senate which will make paper ballots available at every polling place.

The legislation doesn’t go far enough but it’s a start. Congress adjourns at the end of this week, so they only have two days to pass this law in time for the November election. We all need to bombard the House and Senate with e-mails asking them so sponsor and pass this bill.

This legislation urges — but doesn’t require — local jurisdictions to make paper ballots available at every polling place. If this law passes, local jurisdictions will be partially compensated for the cost of providing paper ballots. (Like I said, the law doesn’t go far enough but it’s a beginning.)

This is not a partisan issue. If you’re a conservative and you think it would be just hunky-dory if Diebold wins another election for you, think again. The shoe will be on the other foot someday. When the pendulum swings, it’s gonna swing a loooong way.

Please click here to ask your senators and your congressional representative to pass this law NOW. Make your vote count this time.

Kvatch: Yeah, this bill is probably a poor substitute, but at this late stage I guess a toothless substitute is better than nothing. As our illustrious defense secretary would say, "you vote on the bill you have, not the bill you wish you had." It's too bad the Republicans who kept HR550 bottled up can't be held accountable, but unfortunately this issue doesn't seem to make as good a soundbite as "gay marriage" or "cut and run."

Yellowdog Granny, FC: Thanks.

Every time you losde an election you can't help yourself but blame something other than your candsidate was a joke and didn't deserve to win. We had to legal electionbs and just because Al Bore and Herman Monster didn't win you act like they lost because of some conspiracy. Get over it, George W. Bush got more votes and he won fair and square.

Uh, whatever, Jon. I'm not sure what the point of your comment is. Does this mean you're against a bill to ensure a paper trail for all votes? If you're certain that Republicans have won the last 3 elections fair and square, verifiable ballots will prove you right. It's a win-win for everybody. Come on, hurry up and click on the link and ask your legislators to vote for the bill.

911 Bill of Rights: Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen it before, but this looks good.

tom, it'll never be over.

take a look at the country's new prisoner disappearance/torture legislation.

our government, along with hundreds of millions of americans, think this legislation is a good idea.

they don't grasp that what they've done is dishonor and desecrate america. this country may never recover. or it may, but not in our lifetime. or it may, but only after we throw bush into a deep hole.

the point being...it's never over.

Spaceneedl: Yeah, I know, I know. It'll never be over. The news gets overwhelming sometimes; there's a tendency toward burnout. For that matter, even if the '06 and '08 elections turn out exactly the way I wanted, I'll always be watching and nitpicking. That's what good citizens are supposed to do.

Jon doesn't have a point-he may well be every bit as stupid as the Chimperor he worships. In literally hundreds of comments, I've never seen anything even hinting at an original thought.

For the Jons, let the pendulum swing the other way. It seems to be the only way they'll ever learn anything.

Those who accept the administration's lies without thinking will be in for a huge shock when the pendulum does shift back toward the left. I for one am excited about the prospect of reading all the tell-all books and hearing all the tell-all interviews about how the administration has been outright lying to us for the past 5 1/2 years. Those lies will be proven to indeed have been lies, and those of us who know we are being lied to now and don't like it will be vindicated. And that will feel good, watching wingnuts eating crow.

But that will be bittersweet. So much damage has been done by the Bush administration during the last 5 1/2 years that it may well take years for our country to recover. It is just plain sad to me that we even have to have people like Bush and his cronies in office. There are a lot of Republican leaders who aren't leveling with the American people. There are also some Democrats who also aren't on the up-and-up, but I look at which party is in office now, and what that party has done, and I think that there are/were better ways to deal with terrorism, the economy, the environment, education, foreign policy, immigration, homeland security, and just about all other problems we have in America today. GOP yellers need to be reminded that Bill Clinton has not been president for the past 5 1/2 years... Bush has been. If someone is perfectly satisfied with the job Bush has done, I have to wonder how closely they are paying attention to what he and his friends are doing.

As much as some righties like to characterize the left as such, Democrats don't all fit conveniently into categories like tree-huggers, appeasers, communists, socialists, anti-gun ownership, pro-abortion, anti-God, etc. ad nauseum. Sure there are some of those folks on the left.... but Bush was shown on CBS News last night saying some VERY discouraging things about Democrats, lumping all lefties into one group of sniveling, enemy-assisting "obstructionists"... making it sound as if our country's own worst enemy is its own people, especially those who don't agree with HIM... proving once again that he is not the president of the entire United States, but only the president of those who vote and think as he does. He doesn't care about the rest of us, and he probably doesn't care about Republican voters either, as long as they vote for him so he can continue his plans for world domination.

We keep hearing the question "What October Surprise will the Republicans pull?"

I'm tired of that question. The question I want to hear asked, and considered at higher levels, is "What October Surprise will the Democrats pull?" If lefties ask that question, then we put the other guys on the defensive instead of always letting them do it to us. And sure, the Democrats need to connect better with voters and better portray themselves as the party of real substance... but given the negative public perceptions of the left created by the rightwing spinners over the last five years, the left should be fighting fire with fire.

The left is off to a good start, getting news out about the NIE report, and giving advance reports about respected investigative reporter Bob Woodward's upcoming book in which he talks of how America has been misled on Iraq. Because the GOP controls Washington DC, there won't be any congressional investigations or much coming out of Congress that might constitute a leftist "October Surprise"... so I guess if anything should happen it will have to be something reported on by the media. The mainstream media has given Bush a mostly-free ride for most of his time in office, but the post-"9-11" stupor seems to be wearing off lately, among both the press and the public.

I will also be glad when the elections are over, mainly for the reason that I am tired of hearing all the repeated negative GOP attack ads on TV and radio. The GOP said this is what we would be getting, and on this, at least, they have kept their word.

Jolly Roger: Yup, for millions of rightwingers, the only way they’ll learn anything is when the pendulum swings. And it’s gonna swing.

Snave: I also am looking forward to all the tell-all books that’ll come out after the wingnuts have been voted out. This is assuming the authors of these books won’t be rendered to Syria for political re-education before they can get their work published.

The October Surprise — yeah, that’d be a switch if the Democrats actually pulled off something like that. Instead of just passively waiting to see what the Republicans are gonna do, the Democrats could actually get out there and define the issues, frame the debate and stand for something. Naaaaahhhh!!!
