Where Are They Now: Pat Boone

Anybody remember Pat Boone, that squeaky-clean icon of the 1950s and early ‘60s? He was famous for doing sterile white-bread cover versions of rock and roll hits. He took some of the wickedest examples of The Devil’s Music and transformed them into cute sugar-coated little ditties that Ward and June Cleaver could tap their feet to.

Well, he’s still around. He’s resurfaced as a comedy writer. He sometimes writes for WorldNetDaily — definitely one of the funniest wackiest comedy sites on the Internet. In his latest “article,” he does a dead-on hilarious imitation of a mouthbreathing Biblethumper. Check it out.

I thoroughly enjoyed Pat's rendition of "Enter Sandman"... it is a "bad classsic"! I will definitely check out the link.

Snave: I never heard any of those heavy metal covers he did in the late '90s. But I admired his willingness to be self-effacing and make fun of himself. Even though that album was tongue-in-cheek, some of his fellow "Christians" were appalled.

But he's really gone off the deep end now. When the Abu Ghraib scandal first became known, he blasted Sixty Minutes for airing a story about it -- the usual rightwing blather about "hating America" and "aiding and abetting the enemy." And now this ACLU article of his: "Aieeee" sums it up.

Like Pat I have some problems with the ACLU. Have you ever heard how they feel about the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution?

God Bless America, God Save The Republic.

David: I haven't followed the ACLU that closely. I don't always agree with them but I'm sure glad we have them. I wasn't aware of them being against the second amendment.

I used to read StopTheACLU (just for entertainment purposes) and I don't remember seeing any mention of gun laws. They always seemed to be trotting out the usual urban legends about gay marriage, child pornography and the "war" on Christians.

Pat Boone. No. Sorry, that guy scares me. I still have nightmares from seeing an old black and white video of him singing "Tutti Frutti" and snapping his fingers.

Mommy...hold me...

pat looks oddly like david hasselhoff...and sounds like a back-woods evangelical zealot.

what's his daughter have to say about all this? does tyranny light up her life?

ah, forget it...rhetorical question.

Spaceneedl: Yup, he's a zealot all right. Haven't thought of Debbie Boone in eons. "You Light Up My Life" has to be the blandest, most sterile and saccharine song ever. The apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Remember the shit with Pat Boone on "Roger & Me" (Michael Moore film that I worship)? What a cheesy motherfucker...Pat, not Michael, that is. :-)

Ariadnek, Ph.D.: I don't remember Pat Boone in that movie. I saw it a long time ago. Come to think of it, either our VCR or the video kept screwing up and we missed parts of the movie. There wouldn't be much common ground between Michael Moore and Pat Boone, that's for sure.

I've always been a big fan of PB, so it gladdened me to no end to find him still solidly on the right side of the spectrum. I may even send him a contract offer to write for me!

I have to admit, I've thought the guy was a fuckstain for 25 years or so now. This article doesn't do anything to alter that impression.

Jolly Roger: Yup, that article shows he hasn't changed much in the last few decades.

As for the ACLU being against firearms, I would agree with them, but to a point. Do our citizens need to be armed with equipment that is better than what our policemen have? I don't think so. Why do citizens need machine guns? Surely not for hunting.

I find it sad how the NRA used to be such a sportsmens' organization, and how it has morphed into a right-wing political group led by crazies. I think there is definitely a middle ground on the gun issue, and that maybe the ACLU goes a bit far in that department... as the NRA does.

I'm fine with rifles, pistols and shotguns. I plan on keeping my rifle, it is like a good old friend. I have owned it for about 40 years, and I've never used it to defend myself, or to fire at any living thing... just for shooting an occasional pinecone out of the top of a tree, or for shooting at a paper picture of a bullseye. It's a nice 1893 Stevens Marksman, in a way a work of art... and despite the fact it is designed for killing things, it remains one of my favorite possessions.

For all you rightists who think that all of us lefties are in favor of taking everyone's guns away, I say F*CK YOU, DUMBASS. Read the Oregon Democratic party platform... some smart Democrats have made sure it contains a statement about how the Oregon Dems support the Second Amendment. If you believe ANYONE who votes Democrat is against the Second Amendment, you are being duped.

But back to Pat Boone... Jolly Roger, you summed that matter up very nicely. What you said!

Snave: As far as guns are concerned, I have no personal interest at all. I don't think I've fired a gun (and I'm sure I'd remember) since boot camp, and I don't even want to think about how many decades ago that was.

I'm in favor of the 2nd amendment because everyone has the right to defend themselves in whatever way necessary. I could always change my mind and buy a gun and start target shooting. (Unlikely though.) You can't always count on the police to be there when you need them. And there have been court rulings that the police are not obligated to protect any particular individuals. They're only required to maintain the general order.

As far as the stereotypes about liberals being against guns, there's always Michael Moore. He's a lifelong member of the NRA.
