Boy George Overruled

George W. Bush’s hand-picked Supreme Court — who picked him for president, how cozy — has ruled against the Fratboy King.

The Bush Court ruled against the military tribunals of SUSPECTED terrorists. Sorry wingnuts, the all-caps bold text is a big word with three syllables. You’ll have to look it up.

The Court ruled that our Caliph still has to comply with American laws and the Geneva Convention. That noise you hear is the sobbing and wailing of thousands of rightwing bloggers. WAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! We want our police state!

Now the question is: what to do about the 450 prisoners in Guantanamo Bay? Two years ago the Court ruled that Der Fuhrer couldn’t just detain suspects indefinitely without a trial or access to a lawyer. Today’s ruling dealt with Bush’s burning desire to try the suspects by military tribunal.

The Court ruling was 5 to 3. Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented (of course). Chief Justice John Roberts had to abstain from the case.

Justice Anthony Kennedy’s opinion included “Trial by military commission raises separation-of-powers concerns of the highest order."

The legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights said “It’s certainly a nail in the coffin for the idea that the president can set up these trials.”

Justice Stephen Breyer said that “Congress has not issued the executive a blank check.”

Ain’t that the truth. Today the system worked. Is this a great country or what?!?!?

This gives me some hope that the Supreme Court has not yet been trashed, and that all their decisions won't just go along with whatever the Boy King wants.

As for the rest of the people stuck in Gitmo, give them their trials and get them out of there if they haven't done anything against the U.S. besides being Islamic.

The noise you hear is ALSO the tantruming POTUS, who is most likely having to be restrained as he lets out one cuss word after another while decrying the existence of the Supreme Court, the Constitution, the House and the Senate.

Like some kids who don't get their way, maybe Dumbya will also hold his breath until his face turns blue.

Snave: Yup, the Court still has one tiny shred of integrity left. Bush just needs one more death or "accident" among those 3 or 4 remaining liberals/moderates so he can turn the Court into another one of his rubber stamps. The people in Gitmo need to be tried and either have the book thrown at them or be set free, just like any other murder suspect. If we start having a separate justice system for "political prisoners" or "terrorists," we're no different than Iraq or Guatemala.

I think I hear the sound of Bush's tantrum, now that you mention it. It's 2 sounds actually. There's the glug glug glug of Jim Beam going down his throat, followed by a different sound as he embraces the porcelain goddess.

Thank goodness someone still believes in the rule of law. The founders would be proud of this.

I did an extensive breakdown of the Steven's opinion. I'm so beat.

Praguetwin: That was an excellent post you did (I left a comment). Very thorough. I can see why you're beat; that must have been exhausting.
