Jesse Helms Has Dementia

The former rightwing Senator from North Carolina has dementia.

This mean-spirited Biblethumping demagogue has spent his life race-baiting, gay-baiting and generally stirring up hatred against the most marginalized members of our society. And NOW he’s suffering from dementia??

How can they tell?

P_Jordan_Sr.: I definitely believe in reaping what you sow. And Helms has a lot of reaping to do.

Well said. I hope his hell involves a lot of large gay black men raping the proverbial shit out of him.

Well You took the words right out of my mouth. The only way I will comment further is if someone either defends him or needs a history lesson on who he is,

That was easy

Brad: Yup, that would serve him right.

Erik: I don't think too many people will be defending him.

I guess I do have more to say. Sometimes in the waning years a person will take the chance to redeem himself, look back and take stock of their lives, especially if they were politicians who compromised their values and let themselves be manipulated by others.

A perfect example was Lee Atwater who grew up with Black Friends, became a Blues musician then race baited with The Willy Horton Commercial. Before he died of Brain Cancer he apologized to the Black Community.

Jesse Helm's opinions seemed to be more morally driven then your average politician but he was owned by the Tobacco Companies. It would be interesting to see if he would redeem himself now that he is away from politics.

However this Dementia will give Jesse the perfect excuse to get away with it and the right wing will say "leave him alone, he has Dementia!" Just like they did for Ronald Reagan every time he blundered.

The real sad part about this is, when Helms dies he's going to get such a shining Obit (like Strom Thurmond) one who doesn't know better will think he was some great statesmen and national hero!

What a shame!

Now I'm finished!

Typical of the left to call someone mean spirited yet enjoy their demise and wish upon the evil afflictions.

Im not a Jesse Helms fan but have you ever heard the term hypocrite?

Erik: I don't see Jesse Helms doing any kind of soul-searching or self-redeeming. He was pretty much driven by a strong sense of morality and right and wrong (his version of it anyway). That's something to be respected, but he also had a mean streak that was beyond mean. I wouldn't usually do a post making fun of someone's affliction, but for him I made an exception.

And yes, he was owned by the tobacco industry.

James: Don't give me that "typical of the left" shit. I'll admit my post was a little below-the-belt, but Helms deserves it since he was such a cold bastard. And some of the rightwing blogs out there are the meanest and lowest (yours doesn't seem to be like that). Hillary Clinton and Cindy Sheehan have been dragged through the mud a lot worse than any conservative figure. I assume you'll be commenting at their blogs to tell them how hypocritical they are.

I have worked with patients who have dementia, and I wouldn't wish it on anybody. In the case of Helms, I don't believe I am a hypocrite for agreeing with anyone who says this may well be a case of karma. Sometimes what goes around comes around in ways that are good, sometimes it happens in ways that are bad. Whether this is bad or good? Bad karma, I'd say.

I don't like seeing him have dementia, but I never liked Helms to begin with... I don't know if I could even call it poetic justice that he has dementia. The saddest thing about it to me is that now he may not have enough marbles left to make the kind of apology Lee Atwater did... although I rather suspect that if was capable of doing such a thing, he would probably choose not to do so.

The guy is a jerk, plain and simple. I feel badly that he and his loved ones will have to suffer with his deteriorating mind. Then again, maybe they (and a whole lot of Americans) have suffered with his more-or-less functioning mind for years.

I imagine he will need good luck in his afterlife.

Snave: I think Helms has sown a lot of bad karma, bad juju, whatever you want to call it. Whatever comes next for him, he'll come to regret being such an asshole. Maybe he'll come back as a battered debt-ridden housewife with 5 kids and another one on the way (and being hated by proper and "decent" people).
