Iran and Iraq: More Parallels

The outsourcing never ends. The latest job field to be outsourced: Special Ops and Intelligence. The Pentagon is recruiting a rightwing terrorist organization to stir up civil unrest in Iran.

This way our mission can be accomplished faster when we invade.

This terrorist organization is called Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK). Right now they’re operating in two regions of Iran. One area is a Sunni stronghold; the other is mostly Shiite. Their goal is to stage an insurgency of the Iranian Sunni population.

The Pentagon started using MEK shortly after the 2003 Iraqi invasion. The group had close ties to Saddam Hussein. Dick Cheney was the main person in favor of using this group. The idea was opposed by the State Department and Condoleezza Rice.

According to an intelligence official: “The US army secured a key MEK facility 60 miles northwest of Baghdad shortly after the 2003 invasion, but they did not secure the MEK and let them basically be because [then Deputy Defense Secretary Paul] Wolfowitz was thinking ahead to Iran.”

The same official also said: “We disarmed [the MEK] of major weapons but not small arms. [Secretary of Defense Donald] Rumsfeld was pushing to use them as a military special ops team, but policy infighting between their camp and Condi, but she was able to fight them off for a while.”

Saddam Hussein used MEK for arresting and torturing non-Sunnis and suspected dissidents. The more things change…

A UN official says MEK has been active in Iran — under U.S. military civilian leadership — for about a year.

But don’t worry. Iran will be a cakewalk. American soldiers will be greeted as liberators, and throngs of grateful Iranians will shower them with candy and flowers. Oh, and Iranian oil will help pay for the War on Terror.

Dusty: Yup, no doubt they'll use the same soundbites again, since they worked so well the first time. Some people really can be fooled all of the time.

A hunting trip with Cheney, yeah, that would be perfect for that DEA agent.

God help us.

All this murderous, greedy, horrific American foreign policy for the past sixty years since WWII has been utterly shameful.

We will pay dearly, as 9/11 was only the beginning.

WAT: Yup, our foreign policy really sucks. I don't know if it's gotten worse, or if we're just becoming more aware of what's been going on for the last sixty years. Either way, we need a regime change in the White House.

Erik: Oh yeah, Gitmo won't be enough. We'll have to find a few more secret prisons in Eastern Europe.
