Firing Dick Cheney

The Los Angeles Times has called on Bush to fire his brain vice president, Dick Cheney. The Times editorial urged a “far more audacious makeover” of the Bush administration.

Last week Press Secretary Scott McClellan resigned, and Karl Rove will return to his shadowy Joseph Goebbels role of manipulating the public was demoted.

The Times editorial said “The remaking of the president in the public eye likely will require more than last week’s game of musical chairs.” Treasury Secretary John Snow is considered most likely to be the next chair thrown off the Titanic.

The Times said it would be more meaningful if Rumsfeld resigned and Cheney was fired. “Throwing Cheney overboard would be an implicit repudiation of the excessively hawkish foreign policy with which the vice president, even more than Rumsfeld, has been associated.”

The paper also said “Bush has acknowledged that he has spent much of his political capital on Iraq, and the way to replenish the reserves is to replace the officials most associated with the overreaching that led to the tragedy in Iraq — and with the administration's broader disdain for diplomacy.”

Well, it’s a thought, but is it possible? Dick Cheney getting fired by George W. Bush — imagine that, a ventriloquist getting fired by his dummy.

Well, it would be a great day for the Republic, but we know it would never happen.

I'll give them this, that's pretty ballsy for a major metro newspaper.

They'll certainly get a lot of flack for it..

Though I'm skeptical of Dick or Rummy being fired/resigning I kinda wonder if one of them might leave as a trade-off instead of impeachment proceedings. Time will tell...

Mike V.: Let's hope the LA Times will be the first of many metro papers to do this.

Livia: I don't know if any of the top people in the Bush Administration would sacrifice their careers willingly or not. They're all so egocentric and self-absorbed, it's hard to picture.

J. Marquis: Thanks.

L: Yeah, he sure talks and acts like he did.

Self-Loathing Liberal: Yup, getting an intern for Bush, that's what it'll take. The hardcore Christians who blindly support him would turn on him in a New York minute.

Erik: Good question. Either Rove, or somebody higher up who's pulling Rove's strings.

Self-Loathing Liberal: That's my guess. One of those shadowy organizations like Project for a New American Century (PNAC); and there are other groups like that behind the scenes. Rove is brilliant at what he does, but I think he's doing this on someone else's orders.

I agree with The Major, I love the last paragraph of your post. I also love the crossouts... they really do underscore the transparency of the mindset behind the actions of Bu$hCo.

Dumbya didn't relieve Rove of any duties as much as he merely gave Rove more freedom to do what he does best: undermine Democratic election campaigns. If Rove is spending too much time at the White House, how is he going to be used to his full abilities? The GOP is desperate to keep their majorities in the House and Senate, so now their white knight in shining armor can come to their rescue. Giving Rove a different kind of assignment doesn't improve things in the administration or in the country, it will just make things worse. We haven't really gotten rid of Karl, and his influence will be greatly known during the next six months.

I say "kudos" to the L.A. Times for suggesting that Cheney be fired. It is a paper undoubtedly reviled by conservatives already, so what do they have to lose in that department?

I think The Self-Loathing Liberal is correct in believing that nothing would really change re. gas prices, disaster preparedness, or the war if Cheney was dismissed. A dismissal of Rumsfeld might have more impact on that... As for the war, I think the only way to get rid of it would be to start by getting the Republicans out of the White House, which is anything but a slam dunk. How much will the party's braintrust be urging McCain (assuming he will be their nominee in 08) to ratchet up the fearmongering, so they can win by intimidating the public, and thereby keep their war going?

I don't trust Bu$hCo to replace guys like Cheney and Rumsfeld with anyone who would be more in line with what Americans want. I believe there are potential replacements out there who are just as bad as Dick and Rummy; they're just relative unknowns, without the high profiles. Who would replace Cheney? Who knows... Who would replace Rumsfeld... Wolfowitz? Ugh.

I think it's time for America to use an overused Republican tactic of recent years: let's have a recall election. First we can vote to recall Bush. I think the country would vote in favor of that; Republicans would like to keep the White House and see it occupied by someone who has some credibility, while the Democrats would like Bush out of there, and one of our own in his place. Once the recall was official, there would be some runoff elections and we would get to between a Democratic and a Republican alternative to the travesty we're now having to endure.

Self-Loathing Liberal: Yeah, it's hard to tell with Rove, whether he's more of a real player or one of the higher-ranking puppets.

Snave: Yup, I'm afraid Rove will be working harder than ever behind the scenes. We'll have to brace ourselves for the next phony hotbutton issue he comes up with; something that will distract millions of voters and cause them to vote Republican.

If only there could be national recall elections. Bush would be gone in a landslide. Whoever replaces him couldn't possibly be as Godawful. Wolfowitz would be worse, but he couldn't get elected.
