“Rally Around the President. We’re At War!”

Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) has proposed censuring Bush for allowing domestic eavesdropping. Republicans will undoubtedly get in their usual lockstep formation and prevent any sort of censure or investigation of their Leader.

Censuring basically means a scolding. A lot of people think this pisspoor excuse for a president needs more than just a scolding, but it’s a start.

Feingold’s censure resolution led to a very telling comment from Bill Frist. He said he hoped al Qaeda was not listening to the infighting. “The signal that it sends, that there is in any way a lack of support for our commander in chief who is leading us with a bold vision in a way that is making our homeland safer, is wrong.”

This is exactly how right-wingers always react to any criticism of their master. Say anything negative about the Iraqi war, and you're “demoralizing the troops” and “aiding and abetting the enemy.”

Any criticism of Bush is met with a thundering “We are at war!” Nevermind that it’s an elective, totally unnecessary war. Bush has chosen to make himself a Wartime President and this is supposed to make him immune from any disagreement or criticism.

If al Qaeda is listening in on our infighting, they’ll hear democracy in action. It’s not always pretty, but it sure beats the shit out of the fundamentalist police state they’re fighting for.

During the Senate Watergate hearings in 1973, Soviet Premiere Leonid Brezhnev was visiting the United States. Some people thought we should close down the hearings during Brezhnev’s visit so he wouldn’t see all the bickering and infighting. The hearings continued right on schedule, with the reasoning that Brezhnev should see the inner workings of a democratic government, blemishes and all.

It’s too bad the Republican Party has turned into a bunch of faceless mindless automatons.

See, the problem with lefties like you, is that you assume that just because someone is a Republican, that they are neo-con Bush lovers.

Just not true.

But, anyone with half a brain would realize that we are at war, whether you agree with it or not, and embracing "freedom fighters" and talking shit just makes us look bad.

Now is a time for unity.

Jenn: It doesn't concern me whether you're a Bush-loving neocon or not. Either way, you've fallen hook line and sinker for this rhetoric of "we need to show the enemy a united front! We're at war!" It's becoming more obvious to everyone -- conservatives, independents, liberals, you name it -- that Bush manipulated us into this war. He needs to be impeached, not kid-gloved because he's a "wartime president."

Try a little independent thought to go along with your political incorrectness (referring to your blog title).

Station Agent: Thanks.

jenn, it's ironic that you talk about people with half a brain.

see, it's the people who don't understand what it means to be an american that make us look bad. bush, cheney, gonzales...they are neck-deep in anti-american activity, and righties like you are happy to facilitate it. you embrace the same kind of totalitarian vision as the enemies of liberty.

dissenting when our leaders engage in idiotic, self-destructive courses of action is one of the responsibilities that comes with freedom. if you agree with this fact, then we can have unity.

until then, you're the one on the wrong side.

What Bill Frist fails to grasp is that our troops are already demoralized. Why are they demoralized? Because their/our Commander-in-Chief is an egotistical idiot who is the frontman for a gaggle of other egotistical idiots!

Jenn hit the nail on the head when saying embracing freedom fighters makes us look bad.

On the Civil Rights era when people where fighting against Jim Crow - Conservatives denounced those same "Freedom Fighters" as making us look bad.

We proved them wrong back then too

Rambling Taoist: Yup, you've got it. We couldn't possibly demoralize the troops any more than they already have been. What could be more demoralizing than hearing a different Mission every week? WMD, al Qaeda connections, 9/11 connections, spreading democracy...If any civilian boss gave such conflicting and shifting goals, his employees would be coming apart at the seams.

Erik: Yeah, the difference between Jenn's cohorts and Sheriff Bull Connor -- 45 years. (OK, it's sort of a rough analogy, but...)

Good post! Our troops are stuck in a no win situation. In order to "stay the course" as Bush wants, we will be hard pressed to get out gracefully. No one will be happy and I wonder if the Iraqi people will care at all?

Jill: Thanks. Their "staying the course" is causing more senseless deaths every day, and stirring up more and more international hatred.
