Iraqi War Demonstrations

Over the weekend, lots of people demonstrated for and against the Iraqi invasion. We found the WMDs, accomplished the Mission and our soldiers were greeted as liberators; showered with candy and ice cream by throngs of grateful Iraqis So far we've seen the deaths of 2,300 American soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians. We're quagmired more hopelessly than ever, and we've alienated most of our former allies.

Now I’m not pretending this is an accurate statistic, but in our small town, the local newspaper reported that “more than 100” people demonstrated against the Iraqi war on Saturday. There was also a pro-war demonstration attended by “about twenty” people.

Biased reporting from the “liberal media?” The local paper here is way too small-town-y to possibly be labeled as liberal or conservative. You’ve seen papers like this. “Next Wednesday the Bridge Club will be meeting at the home of Mrs. Minnie Hagerton,” etc. Sorry Rightoids, this paper isn’t a fifth column for the terrorists.

The town's voters — this is a red county in a blue state.

Aside from the numbers, there was one thing very noticeable about each protest rally. The anti-war rally was inventive; creative. There were public speakers and live music. And some of the signs and slogans were funny and maddening at the same time. My personal favorite was “torture those as you would have them torture you.”

The pro-war demonstrators had a grand total of TWO different signs: “Support Our Troops” and “God Bless America.” Oh, and you could go blind looking at all the American flags and flag decals. Talk about seeing red. And seeing stars.

Aside from being about as original as the 9,725th Ford Escort to roll off the assembly line, these two slogans say absolutely NOTHING about a person's stand on the Iraqi invasion.

Contrary to what you hear from armies of rightwing automatons, nobody is “against the troops” or “hates America.” Hate the slippery pukebag that’s currently blighting the White House? Absolutely! This is a great country that’s suffering from a severe infection, and that infection needs to be eradicated.

The country itself, and the “Leader” currently ruining it — two separate things. Unfortunately it’s very difficult for some people to grasp these two facts at the same time.

So again, this isn’t supposed to be an accurate survey, but: in a small town in a red county in a blue state, anti-war demonstrators outnumbered pro-war demonstrators by five to one.

As we "celebrate" the three-year anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War, we should remember that the anniversary of "Mission Accomplished" isn't far behind. That is an anniversary we absolutely CANNOT let go unnoticed.

EAPrez, your weblog looks great but every time I try to go there my damned server or messed-up computer or whatever kicks me off. One of these days I will be able to check it out! You might like mine... I notice we both have the Bush countdown thing going. Kind of depressing, isn't it... to see how many days are left... but at least the numbers are always decreasing.

Snave: Ah yes, Mission Accomplished, pulling down Hussein's statue, the looting of the museums in Bhagdad -- we'll have to have 3-year celebrations of all these anniversaries.

It's one of those things where if it gets repeated enough, people believe it.
If you do not:
support the war
support the prez

you are a terrorist and hate America.

it's getting so bad that the (33%?) that still love Bush pretty much have only that as a comeback.

Funny, didn't see much in the way of online news, like what about the group that were "walking to New Orleans"? Back in the day, such stuff made headlines.

Mike V.: Yup, that's about the range of those 33-percenters. That's probably about the percentage of the population that's either a militant Christian and/or watches Fox News and believes every word of it.

AlyceClover: I hate to admit it, but I don't know anything about a group walking to New Orleans. You're right, I guess there wasn't much news coverage of it.

Thanks for the compliment. Your blog looks interesting too.

We didn't have any pro-war demonstrators here (Columbus, OH), but we did have a turn out of about 1000 anti-war demonstrators (which was on the 4th page of the paper and there wasn't much of a write up).

Still, we had the "God Bless America" thing going on too, which really got under my skin, being an atheist.

I've been here a few times, but it's my first comment (I think). Love your points of view. :-)

We had a big rally in Sydney, a few thousand and the media downplayed it. I'd like to say the idea of any media company being liberal is a load of crap. These companies are out to make money and of course they'll support Bush, who is doing everything he can to support business by stuffing workers.

There were no pro-war rallies in Oz, at all. Just one lonely demonstrator draping himself in the American flag.

Cassandra: Glad you had an anti-war demonstration in Columbus. I always think of Ohio as pretty conservative, so that sounds like a good turnout.

Your blog looks good; you're part of that "American Bloggers for Inclusive Debates" blogroll. I'm in it too; I haven't posted about it yet, or done anything, but this is something we all need.

Benjamin Solah: I'm glad Sydney had a big rally. Yeah, that "liberal media" that conservatives complain about -- I sure never found them. They're all owned by large corporations.

Well I just don't get this. Tom we go way back (trying not to give away our ages)Remembering the Vietnam Protest? The right wing got invovled and then it was OK to be against the war even though the Vietnamese were "gasp" Communist, whom everybody knows were deterimined to ruin our way of life.

Plus this was a rightous action declared by our president and you are supposed to support him....Right!

Try telling that to the right wing back then

These pro-war people think that draping themselves in American flag paraphernalia makes them more American or something. It's such bullshit.

I just blogged about an experience I had with such a person - ugh.

Erik: Give away our ages?? I'm only 19; you must have me confused with someone else :)

Yeah, it sucks that being against an illegal and immoral war doesn't have any credibility until the Right/ "correct" side finally comes around.

Erinberry: Oh yes, draping yourself in an American flag makes your views much more legitimate. Or so they say.

You know, I didn't see Ohio as conservative until recently, but I guess that's because I went from living in from Colorado Springs to here. Colorado Springs is super conservative in my opinion, and Ohio was a nice break.

Hey, thanks. I appreciate the compliment on my blog. Posting on the subject of that blogroll is on my list of things to post for sure. It would certainly be a good direction for this country to go in.
