Republicans Squirm; Bush Orchestrates another “Rally”

After squirming in the spotlight for the past few weeks, the House of Representatives has finally admitted that the national IQ isn’t low enough to be fooled by their smoke and mirrors. They grudgingly voted 406 to 20 to revoke their rule changes which had basically castrated the House Ethics Committee.

Republicans have been trying to “investigate” Tom DeLay using this pitiful, toothless Ethics Committee that couldn’t have found the Ku Klux Klan guilty of racism. Even with the whitewashing rules revoked, the committee is still stacked with Republicans who are fiercely loyal to DeLay, but at least this is a step in the right direction.

The former chairman of the Ethics Committee, Joel Helfley (R-CO), was kicked out of the committee by House Speaker Dennis Hastert. Helfley had the nerve to admonish DeLay on several previous investigations.

Could this be another bad sign for DeLay? Bush held one of his famous pre-arranged, orchestrated “rallies” to show his support for Delay. And — Surprise! — the audience was full of “spontaneous” cheers and hollers for good ol’ Tom DeLay.

These invitation-only, scripted “rallies” and “meetings” are Bush’s favorite method for showing the groundswell of public support for dismantling Social Security. Maybe this slippery tactic is a sign of desperation. Let’s hope Tom DeLay’s political career and Bush’s attacks on Social Security are both heading for a downward spiral.

And naturally, the things people see on the news will be those carefully-chosen crowds of people at orchestrated rallies, cheering for Tom DeLay and for Bush's proposed changes to Social Security. Another fine example of our "liberal media" at work, right? 8-)>

The "news" will be that rallies were held, and although the public will see these outpourings of enthusiasm for all things Neocon, they won't be told that the behavior of the events' participants was mostly not indicative of general public opinion.

This just seems to me like another situation in which one of the two major political parties is using the media as a tool for their political gain.

If the president does it, it's news... ? If that's true, and the right spin is put on it, just think about how the political opinions of many Americans can be molded!

They say money is the root of all evil, but I'm beginning to think television is catching up fast.

Snave: You've got it. And then to complete their circular logic, whenever there's a survey that shows 70% of the public disagrees with those "spontaneous" demonstrations for Social Security reform or whatever, conservatives say the results are wrong or the survey was biased. They get their minds made up, and then anything that contradicts their preconceived notions is just dismissed as "the liberal media."

These rallies are the Potemkin America, aren't they? Why is it that only the left knows they're totally staged?

Brother Kenya: Yeah, it does seem like only the Left is aware of this. Conservatives seem perfectly content to point at the TV newscast and say "look at all these happy people who agree with me."

Yes! And if ignorance is bliss, doesn't it make sense that all those people at these special rallies are so happy? Too happy to see that their emperor is naked, anyway.

Snave: Yup, happy and ignorant. That describes them in a nutshell. When they finally do see that their emperor is naked, maybe they'll rise up in anger. One can hope, anyway.

Well, the LEAST they could do would be to tell him to put some damned clothes on... but I like the "rising up in anger" idea better! Heh!
