Will the Radical Right Self-Destruct?

The Radical Right wingnuts have Jumped The Shark. Their 15 minutes are almost up. The Terri Schiavo Show was the biggest flop since Gigli. And they’re still spinning and re-spinning the Weapons of Mass Destruction, I mean, uh, Iraq’s connection with 9/11, oops, er, you know, the Saddam Hussein/bin Laden connection, oh, I mean, uhh, hey look, the Iraqis are voting. See, it was worth 2,000 American lives, tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians and hundreds of billions of dollars. Right?

Most Americans believe that the Iraqi invasion was wrong, Bush handled everything poorly once the war started, and the number of American casualties is unacceptable. The governments of England and Australia — possibly the last two countries the U.S. hasn’t alienated — are sinking in the polls, mostly because of their support for the war in Iraq.

These political disasters (plus the Social Security fiasco) should have the Radical Right cowering in the corner right now. If the Democrats (or even moderate Republicans) can find a spin doctor with one tenth the shrewdness of Karl Rove, now is the time.

The hypocrisy and twofaced-ness of Bush and his puppetmasters has never been so clear, so blatant. A “Culture of Life”?!?!? Sure, if you’re a fetus or a vegetable. Everyone else, F$#&!*# Off. Support Our Troops!! (Pssst -- then we’ll cut their benefits when they come home.) And on and on. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

The Schiavo Republicans (I got that term from the Rude Pundit’s post of 3/28) need to be painted into a corner and forced to fight for their political lives. Make them squirm.

If anything will bring them down it will be their own arrogance and greed. The Delay thing is very promising. They'll have a hard time supporting this creep once all the laundry is out in the air.

Charlie: I think you're right; DeLay plus their own arrogance will bring them down.

Jay777: Glad you liked the post. If you want to see a really huge pile of crap, check out this wackoid site called Stop The ACLU.

I seriously hope the GOP implodes, but what I REALLY hope for is that the Democratic party (where's Howard Dean?) jumps on this opportunity to give them a taste of their own medicine. If tables were turned, Republicans would already be crying out for impeachment.

There does seem to exist a possibility for the whacko extremism that has tried to hijack our political machines to finally be taken down a few notches. But if democrats hope for a chance of regaining the conversational leadership, they must be willing to talk without invoking pure nonsense also. Clear, concise, Common Sense is in short supply on both sides of the aisle, and it's time to insist, no to scream loudly, for politicians who are beholden to no one but the public they purport to serve.

OK Democrat: Yup, that rightist propoganda machine is unparalleled in our history. Hopefully more and more people will start seeing through all their Orwellian tactics.

Mags: Hell yeah. Clinton was impeached for lying about an affair. I don't know how they can keep looking the other way during all of Bush's lies and scandals.

Cuevas: Sometimes I wonder if there's any difference between the Christian fanatics and the Moslem theocrats. If our government was a police state, Falwell and Robertson and Dobson would be just as ruthless as the Moslem jihadists.

Ken: You're right, of course. There's way too much venom on both sides (and I'm guilty too). Both sides need to go back to debating the issues and skip the personal attacks. The cycle keeps reinforcing itself: When one side gets more extreme and shrill, the other side retaliates, etc.

I enjoy reading your blog, and when I am back at my usual computer, I will be sure to bookmark your site and will probably link it to mine, if that's o.k. with you!

By allowing the Republican party to become the political arm of the "religious right" I think their leaders have set the party up to implode. When people who most Americans would perceive to be crazy, like the abortion-rights activist who has been getting press during the Schiavo matter, are associated with the GOP it tends to lower public opinion of the party... not just among leftists, but also among those Republicans who take a more moderate stance on issues.

While I believe the media is becoming increasingly influenced by the right wing, I think they did the country a service by giving the anti-abortion fellow in Florida all of that free press. It served to show the rest of the country how far out in orbit some of those fundamentalist folks really are.

I have never believed the majority of Republican voters are as far to the right as Bush and his administration, or as far out as some of the other theocratic types. The Schiavo matter may be what the GOP has needed for its members to see their party is being taken over by crazies.Sooner or later, many Republican voters will see that it makes very little sense to vote for people who might talk a good game, but who do not have the interests of average Americans in mind.

I think all of us, Republicans and Democrats alike, need to be more vocal when it comes to the kind of folks Bush would like to appoint to the Supreme Court. Allowing our courts to become ruled by fundamentalists could set our country rolling down a slippery slope from which we might not return.

Who would have imagined the GOP leadership could set its own party up to be tarred with the label "party of big government" through the running up of the horrendous national deficit, intrusion into our private lives (i.e. the gay rights issues) and the way they have been meddling in the Schiavo matter by trying to overpower our court system.

Who would you rather have making our legal decisions, judges or magistrates? For more on the movement called Christian Reconstructivism, one place to start is at:

Cheers!

Snave: Thanks for the compliment. I hope you're right that the Republican party either implodes, or goes back to being a mainstream party. The Republicans got hijacked in 2000; I don't know whether that was Bush's plan or if he just rolled over and let the neocons and religious fanatics take control from him. Either way, it can't last (I hope).

America isn't an extremist country -- Left or Right. I sure hope we can go back to just having two mainstream parties that can agree to disagree.
