Fred Phelps

On Tuesday, the people of Topeka, KS voted to retain a local gay rights ordinance. 53% voted to keep the ordinance. Even for the conservative Midwest, it was surprising the vote was so close. The person leading the recall effort was the Rev. Fred Phelps, probably the most filth-spewing, hate-filled person in America. The recall drive should have been totally derailed by its association with Phelps (whose headquarters are in Topeka).

Phelps’ favorite pastime is attending the funerals of AIDS victims and shouting out anti-gay slogans during the ceremony. He also attended the funeral of Matthew Shepard — the gay college student beaten to death in Wyoming in 1998 — for that same purpose.

Phelps’ personal copy of the Bible probably reads, in full: bla bla bla bla… “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” …bla bla bla bla…

If you really want to test your First Amendment convictions, here is Phelps' website. You’ll be appalled; infuriated. In case you want to express your disagreement with him, here is his e-mail address. Not that I’m making any suggestions about sending nasty messages or anything; that would be wrong.

Although I of course agree with you that the man is a jackass for spreading hate, I won't stoop to his level by acknowledging him with a reply. You know the old saying--"A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still"? I'd just be wasting my breath. If there is a Heaven and a Hell, he'll be in for a rude surprise for encouraging others to be as hateful as himself.

This guy belongs either in prison or a mental institute. He's obviously deranged. Are there some hate crime laws that could be applied against him? In any case it's best just to ignore this wacko.

Yea real deranged, I mean, any biologist knows that the penis was designed to go in the anus... wait no. LOL. Actually, homosexuallity was considered a "sexual deviance" until a group of liberal psychologists had a vote and decided to make it "normal". But it's ok, anything is an "alternate lifestyle" now for you liberals. Who knew. Maybe one day schizophrenia will be an "alternate lifestyle" too. I know you guys are already working to force child porn down America's throat.

Easy, simmer down, take a deep breath, find a new 12-step program that works better than the one you're on now -- whatever you have to do. I don't know where you got anything about child porn from this post. Are you hallucinating or something?

I'm pretty calm thank you. :) I believe your favorite organization, the ACLU has come to the "defense" of NAMBLA members in the past (the man boy love association). If I'm not correct, the ACLU is liberal, and just like homosexuality, child porn is not a good thing. So I'm just pointing out how liberals are trying to get progressively worst things shoved down America's throat. First liberals convince everyone that homosexuality is just an "alternate lifestyle". Now liberals are working on child porn. I'm just pointing out that this guy Phelps is extreme for making "GOD HATE FAGS" his web title and threatening fire and brimestone, but he's not off base on his belief that homosexuality is not normal.

Many don't seem to understand the distinction that the ACLU defends the legal rights of some unpopular and unsavory groups, not necessarily their philosophies. It is with hated individuals and groups that rights must be protected to hold the line for the rest of us.

Hold what line? The right to put child porn on the internet? If your talking about freedom of speach, it's not the ACLU that holds the line. Its the informed voter, the sacrificing soldier, and your gun wielding neighbor that holds the line. The ACLU only defends the "free speach" rights of groups it likes, not the average American, and certainly not the "free speach" of anyone to the right of Sam Webb.

The ACLU has also defended Jerry Falwell and the KKK (in seperate cases :)

The ACLU defends many who are prosecuted beyond the law. If the laws are not enforced fairly for unpopular clients, who's next?

How many years ago? I sure doubt they would defend Falwell today. (However, the KKK is a possibility).

The ACLU joined Falwell in 2002. See:
